The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which conducts research on occupational disasters, injuries, and provides prevention advice. NIOSH has three overall goals, including conducting research to reduce work-related diseases and injuries, improving safe and hygienic workplaces through intervention, advice and capacity building, and enhancing global workplace safety and health through international cooperation. The program divided the work of the organization into 8 groups, representing different industry sectors. Subsequently, the program was subdivided into 24 inter-departmental teams. NIOSH has more than 1,400 internal researchers, conducting research on topics including epidemiology, medicine, industrial hygiene, safety, psychology, engineering, chemistry and statistics. The current director of NIOSH is John Howard.
